Sustainability

We're all part of a world dealing with major environmental challenges, so we make caring for our planet a natural part of our daily routine.

Creating a brighter future

At Pelican, we believe that if we engage children at a young age to be conscious about the world we live and the impact we make, this will help to nurture future generations who will continue to care for our planet.

There are many compelling reasons why we do things a little differently here…ultimately being a sustainable nursery is;

  1. Better for the planet

  2. Better for people, our children and staff

  3. Better for wildlife and animal welfare

Pelican came from a passion to provide children with exceptional childcare, caring for them holistically which includes providing them with the highest standard of nutrition, a nurturing, safe environment, free from harsh chemicals. An incredible outdoor area where children can be involved in the process of growing their own vegetables, nurturing plants, ensuring they understand where food comes from. Our staff and children’s wellbeing is our priority.

Creating a brighter future - our eco friendly practices

We are continually looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint; we are conscious that every purchase we make will have some impact on the world in which we live. We will endeavour to ensure that all of the necessities required to make our nursery possible will be as kind to the planet as we can get.

Here are some examples of how we care;

  • We use Kit & Kin biodegradable nappies and wipes. They contain 0% chlorine, latex, perfume, and parabens. They are super soft, contain naturally-derived materials and ingredients, are hypoallergenic and approved by dermatologists. They are plant-based and contain sustainably sourced materials. Packaging is recyclable or sustainable. No animal testing. Carbon neutral plant. We love the fact that 10 babies in Kit & Kin nappies = 1 acre of precious rainforest saved!

  • Our cleaning products are from Delphis Eco. We love supporting this company. Their products are 100% made in the UK and are derived from renewable resources. Their range are readily biodegradable meaning no toxins go into water systems and the environment. They are also phosphate and phosphonate free, having a reduced impact on aquatic life.

  • As much as possible is purchased ethically, either organic or fair-trade. Our favourite companies to buy from are Babipur and Myriad. We can often be found rummaging through charity shops and re-create, to reuse as much as we can!

  • Our cupboard supplies come from Essentials, who are a leading UK organic and Fairtrade product wholesaler.

  • We encourage wildlife and insects such as bees in our garden by growing specific plants.

  • We use Earthborn eco-friendly paints when decorating.

  • Our toilet roll is from Naked Sprout, a small British business who believe, as we do, that by making small everyday changes - we can make a difference. Their mission is to provide affordable, eco-friendly alternatives to everyday products - free from plastic, bleach and harsh chemicals.

  • Rainwater is collected and used to water the gardens and planting.

  • Our waste is recycled and we use reclaimed, recycled and FSC materials.

  • We work with local businesses, to encourage greener miles, such as Ashtons Fishmongers, Nature’s Little Helpers & Pauls Organic Vegetables.

  • We actively encourage a paper-free culture by using email as our main form of communication.

  • We use natural skincare remedies, and particularly love Cardiff company Nature’s Little Helpers for our baby balms.

  • Low plastics (equipment and toys, the ones we have, have either been donated or have been picked up from the local charity shops).

  • No microwaves to cook children’s food.

  • We use organic essential oils instead of toxic air fresheners.

  • We avoid microplastics such as glitter in arts and crafts.

  • Our skin absorbs. It is the largest organ of our body and since it is porous, it absorbs whatever is put on it. What we use on our skin ends up inside our bodies. If the products used contain harmful ingredients such as harsh, toxic chemicals, colours, and fragrances, when put on the skin those ingredients make their way into the body, the blood and lymphatic system. The majority of mainstream body care products contain a cocktail of carcinogenic (cancer forming) chemicals, allergens, and irritants. The developing organs of babies and children are particularly sensitive to artificial /synthetic, toxic chemicals so it is especially important for us to use safe products for our little ones. Which is why we choose not to use artificial fragrances, harsh chemical baby balms, conventional suncreams, artificial air fresheners, plug in air fresheners, allow aerosols inside the nursery, shaving foam for messy play. Instead, we choose to use organic essential oils for fragrance, we use a beeswax balm when changing nappies.

  • Our messy play resources are handmade. Our Playdough, moon sand and cloud dough are made using non-toxic materials, often they are scented with aromatherapy oils to enhance the play experience.
